WRITEUP
CAPESIZE

A change in sentiment was evident today, with conditions improving in the Pacific while the Atlantic continued to strengthen. The BCI 182 5TC increased by $396 to $51,296, with the C5 index gaining 0.209 to $16.250 and the C3 edging up 0.105 to $42.664. In the Pacific, sentiment improved as the day progressed. Bidding opened at $15.75 against offers in the upper $16s, but owners remained resistant, with the sole C5 miner fixing a few vessels at $16.25. There was also talk of an operator paying in the low to mid $16s, suggesting the market was beginning to find firmer ground despite limited miner activity. The Atlantic proved particularly active, with South Brazil and West Africa to China turning into a very busy day, with reports of up to 10 fixtures concluded. The increased activity helped support the market, with $42.69 paid early before further business was reported at $42.90 and $43. Owners continued to hold their ground as demand strengthened, giving the Atlantic a clear sense of momentum. Overall, the market finished on a firmer note, with the Atlantic leading the recovery through strong fixing activity while the Pacific showed signs of stabilising after recent weakness.

PANAMAX
Sentiment remains under pressure across both basins, with the P5TC declining by $392 to $20,535. In the Atlantic, demand is reported to have improved for both fronthaul and trans-Atlantic trades, while the number of prompt vessels available in the North Continent and Western Mediterranean continues to decline. Despite the tightening tonnage list, freight rates are still reported to be softening. Market sources have noted an increase in activity from the US Gulf, with some suggesting that this could begin to establish a floor for rates. In the Pacific, the market remains oversupplied. With activity slowing, owners are reportedly adjusting their rate expectations more closely in line with charterers' bids in order to secure employment. Market participants have also highlighted a slowdown in cargo activity from Indonesia, particularly for stems destined for China.

Atlantic
The Villa Germana (82,146 2025) open Itaguai 1/2 October was said to have been placed on subjects for a fronthaul, but no other details surfaced. Omegra were talked to have covered their end September EC South America stem to SE Asia, although little else was heard.

Asia
The Shi Dai 11 (75,467 2012) open Sual 19 September fixed for a trip via Indonesia to South China with coal to Messrs PPT but the rate was not reported. Starry Bulk fixed their EC Australia requirement to South China for 1 October onwards, but little other details were heard.

SUPRAMAX
The steady improvement in the East continued with NoPac rounds and backhauls fixing above last done levels, and Indonesia to India again showing the biggest gains in the South. The Norse Stride (66,307 2025) prompt Lianyungang went on subjects in the $24,000's for a NoPac round, and the Bao Chang (56,136 2010) CJK 30 September-1 October fixed a trip West Africa at $20,000, however further details didn't materialize. The Paragon Trader (63,702 2025) CJK prompt was on subjects for a trip via Vietnam to the US Gulf at $15,500 for the first 70 days, then $22,500 thereafter, whilst the Ocean Knight (64,100 2026) ex yard CJK around 1 October also fixed a trip US Gulf at $17,000, however there was no split rate mentioned. There was increased period activity on the back of improved Pacific sentiment with the African Inspiration (61,448 2011) prompt Machong said to be on subjects for 6 to 8 months in the mid $22,000's to Damico (first leg clinker to West Africa) and a rumour of another Ultra fixed at $23,500 for 5 to 7 months, although further details have yet to emerge. In the Atlantic the North Americas appear to be in a consolidation phase with varied opinions on direction, whilst the South Atlantic appeared to edge up slightly. Across the Atlantic the Mediterranean continued to gain momentum with a steady increase in demand and the Continent was suddenly very hot after a clear out of tonnage for fertilizers and grains, followed by a surge of scrap demand with rumours of an Ultra fixed at $30,000 for scrap to Turkey, which is said to now appear on the low side. The 11TC average was up $178 on the day to close at $22,275.

 HANDYSIZE
The market saw a highly active trading day, with gains varying across the regions. The BHSI increased by 19 points to 980, while the 7TC average rose by $328 to close at $17,633. The Continent and Mediterranean remained quiet but healthy, with several vessels fixed at notably strong levels. Activity in the US Gulf was also very positive and maintained its upward momentum, underpinned by firmer bids and offers and several fixtures concluded well above previous levels. Meanwhile, the South Atlantic remained healthy, supported by strong underlying demand. The Pacific market was broadly flat, with rates hovering around last-done levels. Period enquiry also remained active, with the Spirit of Tokyo (39,388 2016) open Dalian 20–25 September fixed for five to seven months at $18,000, although further details were not disclosed.

 Atlantic
The Negmar Yako (35,156 2013) was rumoured fixed by Shield for a trip from Port Everglades to the Mediterranean with scrap at around $19,000–$21,000, although further details were not confirmed. In the South Atlantic, the Fabia Schulte (40,041 2015) was fixed from Georgetown for a trans-Atlantic trip at $21,000, while the WL Murom (37,667 2014) was reported fixed by Berge from Vila do Conde to Norway at around $25,000, although further details were unavailable.

Asia
The Anshun (39,231 2019) open Yokohama was fixed for a trip via Japan with slag redelivery Malaysia, at a rate in the mid-$17,000s. Separately, a 32,000-dwt vessel was fixed for a trip with delivery passing Penang and redelivery Singapore at $14,000, although further details were not disclosed.
