WRITEUP
CAPESIZE

The market posted a modest recovery today, with sentiment showing tentative signs of improvement across both the Pacific and Atlantic basins despite trading activity remaining relatively subdued. The BCI 182 5TC index edged up by $369 to $35,640. The C5 index was largely unchanged, rising by 0.1245 to $11.125, while the C3 route gained 0.195 to finish at $32.30. In the Pacific, confidence improved modestly. Although only one major miner was active, the return of several C5 operators helped bolster demand, contributing to a stabilisation in sentiment following recent weakness. Trading remained relatively thin, with offers opening in the mid-to-high $11s against an early bid of $10.75. The sole miner concluded a couple of fixtures at $11.10, while operators were indicating they could pay in the $11.00-$11.25 range, suggesting a narrowing gap between bids and offers. Atlantic sentiment also firmed slightly. Underlying cargo demand remained healthy, with reports of C3 fixing at $32.15 encouraging owners to push index-date offers above $33. However, bids remained closer to $32, resulting in limited fixture activity.

PANAMAX
Negative sentiment was evident across both basins today, with the P5TC declining by $416 to close at $19,629. Market activity remains subdued with brokers reporting limited enquiry on trans Atlantic routes and suggesting that the few discussions taking place are generally below last done levels. Some market sources have highlighted that mineral fronthaul supply appears to be providing a slightly more encouraging picture, with some improvement in activity and vessel supply continuing to look relatively tight. In the Pacific a lack of fresh enquiry continues to weigh on sentiment. The North Pacific has been particularly quiet, with very few fresh cargoes entering the market. Both the North Pacific and Australia have seen vessel availability increase, adding further pressure on rates. The W-Smash (82,742 2013) open Chiba 20 July was reportedly fixed for a trip via East Coast Australia to China, although there was some debate surrounding the achieved rate. Similarly, the CL Dalian (81,578 2014) also open Chiba 21/23 July was said to have fixed a coal cargo from the North Pacific, with no further details currently available. The Horizon Diamond (76,048 2011) open in Hong Kong 26-30 July fixed around $14,500 for a run from Indonesia to South China while the Zhun Xing 9 (81,586 2012) open Dongguan 22 July fixed for an Indonesia round at $16,500, on both the Charterer unknown. The Sasebo Glory (85,020 2016) open Onahama 17 July fixed a Pacific round in the high $19,000's and the Minoan Ocean (93,146 2011) open Huangpu 20 July was said to have fixed for an Australia round, with no other details heard. On the period side activity has been more noticeable, with several fixtures reportedly concluded for durations of around one year, providing a rare bright spot in an otherwise subdued market.

 SUPRAMAX
After collecting and assessing yesterday, things began to return to normal today. The 11TC average was down $102 to $21,863 with the North American routes again taking a hit, especially the fronthaul. The East Mediterranean remains the positive area in the Atlantic, however concluded trades are scarce. In Asia it was mixed with the North showing some negative sentiment, whilst currently South East Asia remains positive with several Ultramaxs reported at $18,000 basis delivery Singapore for trips China, with the Indian Ocean still active and rates relatively flat.

 HANDYSIZE
Following on from yesterday the market saw another subdued session, with limited activity emerging. The BHSI edged up by 2 points to 903, while the 7TC average increased by $31 to settle at $16,255. In the Continent and Mediterranean conditions remained flat, with little visible movement. The US Gulf and South Atlantic extended their downward trend, as ongoing tonnage oversupply continued to weigh on rates and push levels lower. Meanwhile Asia saw a positive turn, with both Owners and Charterers reassessing their positions. Sources noted that more fresh cargoes and healthy backhaul orders could lift rate expectations.

Atlantic
The Grace C (36,903 2013) open EC Central America was reported fixed for an inter-Caribbean trip at $18,500 by Pacnav, although further details were not disclosed. In addition the Sirius (37,705 2011) open NC South America was updated that fixed via US East Coast to the East Mediterranean with scrap at $21,500 by Sims, although further details were not disclosed.
